My name is Nhojj and I am a singer/songwriter. I’m currently preparing for special edition “Out & Proud” First Saturday performance at the Brooklyn Museum on January 7, 2012.

The biggest lesson I feel life has been teaching me lately is to keep pushing past those things that scare me. I just read a quote from Joseph Campbell, “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek” and from my experience that has been so true. I’ve never admitted it publicly, but initially I was afraid of releasing the “Love” music video, because it portrayed same gender love. But the success of that little video took my music career to a whole new level, and now I think life is reminding me again to explore and push beyond my fears.

One of my biggest fears is rejection, I realize I’ve done things that some consider bold or brave, but there are so many more things that I would like to do, but my fear of rejection stops me. I grew up in the Caribbean and just like most people I know, somewhere along the way from childhood to adulthood, I began giving the word “no” too much power over my feelings and sense of value and self worth. If someone said no to me, whether directly or indirectly, I began to question the value of my request and then in turn question myself for making the request instead of realizing that the two aren’t connected.

I am learning that all my requests and desires are valuable because they are mine, if someone disagrees that doesn’t change their value. So my lesson is cherish my desires and honor my requests and allow rejection and acceptance to come and go as they please without interfering with my asking – ask and you shall receive… sooner or later.

My daily challenge is finding new ways to affirm my asking and embrace the other’s choice to reject or accept.
